If you are setting up your own home business - the space your are intending to use i.e. your home office, and the way your organize it, can hold the key to your success. Here are a couple of points to bear in mind:
1. You need to be able to separate work from home life otherwise you will blend the two with not so good results. So keep work and home stuff separate and apart to maintain that difference and so when at ‘work’ be at work. One way is to keep your personal things out of your work space and also when working do not get distracted by home stuff.
2. Ideally, as per the first point, you want to separate the work from home and this is ideally done by choosing a space that is exclusively for work, i.e a spare bedroom, a section of the house not used for something else, the garage, a cabin in the garden. It is important not to double up on an area.
3. Building on the previous point, if you can have a separate and exclusive access to your ‘office’ space then even better. This will help you make the distinction between being at home or at work, especially if you intend to have clients or suppliers over, then this is almost crucial.
3. Get organized with you computer and network - go wireless and get rid of the thousands of cables - keep it neat and organized.
4. Get organized with technology - there are many software programs out there that will help cut costs, be more organized and ultimately more efficient. For example, you can use Skype to make phone calls, get others to leave messages and be able to access this wherever you are.You can have a fax service that emails you instead of a physical fax.Of course you should be able to do all your banking and most of your purchasing online as well.
All in all make, the key points here are separate your space and your time and systematise your operation to be as efficient as possible. You can then get on do the work!

Hi Arthur,
This is a very important topic. Separation of your work area and home area is not always as easy to do as it sounds.
It is also important to have your family understand not to be bothering you all the time while you are working.
Great Post.

Arthur,
You have made some great points here about organizing a home business office. I can certainly relate to this as I have had my own home business office for over 12 years.
Without question, when the home office is disorganized, the business
suffers.
Hi Arthur,
That is one thing I need to do better is to seperate the home office from the home if that makes sense. You have brought up several excellent points why that should be done.
Thanks,
Jim

Hi, Arthur:
Great suggestions for a home-based business. I can tell you, I bought a portable, wireless notebook computer thinking it would be great because I could “take it to work” with me anywhere in the house.
Guess what? It RARELY leaves my home office room because when I’m in my office, I can truly focus on the marketing I am doing. Outside of my office, there are just too many distractions.
So, as you say, a dedicated work space can be so beneficial, when it is possible.

Working from home can be disastrous if you are not organised.
You have given some very good advice here.

Hi Arthur
Very true - it’s important that you have separate space for your home office otherwise your focus gets distracted and weakened. I have a separate room in my house for my office and very little distracts me when I’m working!

Work at Home Business Opportunities
Hi Arthur,
Well, I do have a room upstairs, but have not got around to putting a small air conditioner in it yet - and it is much too hot to work in there in the middle of a Japanese summer, so I sit downstairs with the a/c on!
